How Does Revelation Describe the Second Coming?

Introduction

The Second Coming of Christ is one of the most anticipated and significant events in Christian eschatology. In the Book of Revelation, the final book of the Bible, the apostle John provides a detailed description of Christ’s return, including the signs, symbols, and events leading up to this momentous occasion. For many believers, the Second Coming represents the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promises and the establishment of His eternal kingdom.

But what exactly does Revelation say about the Second Coming? How are we to understand the vivid imagery and prophetic visions of this future event? In this post, we’ll delve into the descriptions of the Second Coming found in Revelation, examining key verses and themes that shape our understanding of Christ’s return.

1. The Second Coming in Revelation: The Return of Christ in Glory

In Revelation, the Second Coming of Christ is depicted as a powerful and glorious event. Revelation 19:11-16 provides one of the clearest descriptions of Christ’s return:

“I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice, he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God.” (Revelation 19:11-13)

This passage paints a picture of Christ returning as a mighty warrior. He rides a white horse, symbolizing victory and purity, and is called "Faithful and True" because of His unwavering justice and righteousness. His eyes are described as “blazing fire,” symbolizing His divine authority and perfect judgment. The robe dipped in blood points to His sacrifice on the cross, reminding us of the price He paid for humanity’s salvation.

This is not the humble Jesus of the nativity but the conquering King, returning to judge the world and establish His reign.

2. The Signs of Christ’s Return

Before the actual Second Coming, Revelation speaks of various signs and events that will precede this momentous day. Revelation 6:12-14 describes some of these signs:

“I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to the earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.” (Revelation 6:12-13)

These natural disasters and cosmic disturbances indicate the turbulent times that will precede Christ’s return. The world will be shaken, both physically and spiritually, as the earth groans under the weight of sin and rebellion. The symbolism of the sun turning black and the moon turning blood red is often interpreted as a sign of judgment and the impending arrival of God’s wrath.

Additionally, Revelation 11:15 states, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign forever and ever.” This verse speaks to the fulfillment of God’s eternal kingdom, where Christ will rule in righteousness and peace after His return.

3. The Battle of Armageddon: Christ’s Victory Over Evil

One of the most well-known aspects of the Second Coming in Revelation is the Battle of Armageddon, where Christ defeats the forces of evil. In Revelation 16:16, it says:

“Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.”

This battle will take place in the final stages of the world’s history, where the forces of evil—represented by the beast, the false prophet, and their followers—will unite against Christ and His army of angels. However, the outcome is never in doubt. Revelation 19:19-21 describes the final victory of Christ:

“Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and his army. But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet…The rest were killed with the sword coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.” (Revelation 19:19-21)

The Battle of Armageddon represents the final defeat of all evil, as Christ’s power is unmatched. His return brings judgment to the wicked and ultimate victory to those who are His.

4. The New Heaven and the New Earth: The Eternal Kingdom

Following Christ’s victory, Revelation describes the creation of a new heaven and a new earth. In Revelation 21:1-4, it says:

“Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.”

This passage signals the end of the old order of things and the beginning of a new, eternal reality where God’s presence will dwell with His people. The new heaven and new earth represent complete restoration, where there will be no more pain, sorrow, or death. Revelation 21:4 promises:

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

This is the ultimate hope of the believer: that after Christ’s return, God will make all things new, and His people will dwell with Him forever in peace and joy.

5. The Call to Be Ready: Living in Expectation

Throughout the Book of Revelation, there is a strong emphasis on readiness and watchfulness. In Revelation 16:15, Jesus says:

“Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.” (Revelation 16:15)

This call to be spiritually alert and prepared for Christ’s return is a central theme. Believers are urged to live in constant expectation of Christ’s return, living holy lives, staying faithful, and working to spread the gospel.

Conclusion: The Second Coming as Our Blessed Hope

The Second Coming of Christ is the culmination of human history and the fulfillment of God’s promises. In Revelation, this event is described as both glorious and terrifying—a time of ultimate judgment for the wicked and eternal joy for the righteous. As believers, the Second Coming is our blessed hope—the day when Christ will return to establish His kingdom, defeat evil, and bring us into His eternal presence.

As we await Christ’s return, let us live in readiness, keeping our hearts fixed on the hope of His glory, and remain faithful to the calling He has placed on our lives.
