How Does God's Grace Set the Stage for Our Purpose? (Ephesians 2:1-9) Before we dive into the profound truth of Ephesians 2:10, it's crucial to understand the verses that precede it. They lay the foundational truth of our salvation, without which verse 10 could easily be misinterpreted as a call to earn God's favor. Let's look at the full passage: "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. This describes my life before Christ, and perhaps yours too. It's a bleak reality – separated from God, following the world's destructive path, and ultimately deserving of His just wrath. There was nothing I could do in that state to earn salvation. God's Rich Mercy (vs. 4-7): But then, a beautiful "But God..." appears. "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved." This is a radical act of love! God, in His boundless mercy, reached down and resurrected us spiritually, not because we deserved it, but because He loves us. This truth began to chip away at my performance-driven faith. Salvation by Grace Through Faith (vs. 8-9): The apostle Paul drives the point home: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." This foundational truth is critical. Salvation is a gift, received through faith, completely unearned. It's not something I could ever work hard enough for.
